Saint Ambrose Philly

Saint Ambrose is a Roman Catholic Parish in Philadelphia. We were founded in 1923, since then our community has shared the love and truth of the Gospel of Christ with our Catholic brothers and sisters and the wider neighborhood. Our worship is faithful to Catholic tradition while embracing the multi-cultural heritages of our parishioners. We’ve educated hundreds of children in the faith as well as preparing them for high school and beyond. Unfortunately our school had to close some years ago, but since then we have continued to offer a comprehensive religious education program for our children continuing our proud tradition of passing on the faith to the next generation. As social changes and challenges have come St. Ambrose’s community has responded to Christ’s call to love one another as he has loved us. Our charitable and community outreach efforts feed and assist hundreds people in need every year. Our parish tries all we can to put the Gospel into practice. Whether you are a life-long parishioner, a visitor or searching for God in your own way you are welcome here at St. Ambrose!

San Ambrosio es una parroquia católica romana en Filadelfia. Fuimos fundados en 1923, desde entonces nuestra comunidad ha compartido el amor y la verdad del Evangelio de Cristo con nuestros hermanos y hermanas católicos y el vecindario en general. Nuestro culto es fiel a la tradición católica al tiempo que acogemos las herencias multiculturales de nuestros feligreses. Hemos educado a cientos de niños en la fe y los hemos preparado para la escuela secundaria y más allá. Desafortunadamente, nuestra escuela tuvo que cerrar hace algunos años, pero desde entonces hemos continuado ofreciendo un programa integral de educación religiosa para nuestros niños continuando con nuestra orgullosa tradición de transmitir la fe a la siguiente generación. A medida que han llegado los cambios y desafíos sociales, la comunidad de San Ambrosio ha respondido al llamado de Cristo de amarse unos a otros como él nos amó. Nuestros esfuerzos caritativos y de alcance comunitario alimentan y ayudan a cientos de personas necesitadas cada año. Nuestra parroquia hace todo lo posible por poner en práctica el Evangelio. Declaración del arzobispo Nelson J. Pérez sobre la invasión de Ucrania

«Como muchos de ustedes, siento una profunda tristeza en mi corazón. La reciente invasión de Ucrania es algo que esperábamos y orábamos para que fuera evitada. La paz se ha hecho añicos; se ha desatado la angustia, el dolor y el sufrimiento. Se han puesto en marcha ahora eventos que conducirán a la pérdida sin sentido de innumerables vidas, la destrucción de propiedades y una crisis humanitaria que no ha sido vista en varias décadas.

En este grave momento de la historia, insto a todas las personas de buena voluntad a responder al llamado del papa Francisco a orar fervientemente por el pueblo de Ucrania y por el fin ahora de este conflicto militar.

En nombre de los obispos, sacerdotes, diáconos, religiosos consagrados y fieles laicos de la Arquidiócesis de Filadelfia, expreso nuestra firme solidaridad con los católicos ucranianos y los ucranianos aquí en la región de Filadelfia y en Ucrania misma.

Statement of Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez Regarding the Invasion of Ukraine

“Like so many of you, my heart aches with deep sorrow. The recent invasion of Ukraine is something we had hoped and prayed would be avoided. Peace has been shattered. Anguish, pain, and suffering have been unleashed. Events have now been put in motion that will lead to the senseless loss of countless lives, destruction of property, and a humanitarian crisis the likes of which has not been seen in several decades.

At this grave moment in history, I urge all people of goodwill to answer the call of Pope Francis to pray fervently for the people of Ukraine and for an end to this military conflict now.

On behalf of the bishops, priests, deacons, consecrated religious, and lay faithful of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, I express our firm solidarity with Ukrainian Catholics and Ukrainians here in the Philadelphia region and in Ukraine itself.

Today, I spoke with Archbishop Borys Gudziak of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia to convey those sentiments. Philadelphia is home to many ethnic Ukrainians. Their families and friends are suffering the catastrophe of war first hand. At this time of uncertainty in Eastern Europe and here at home, may God pour His mercy on all those who are suffering and may Our Blessed Mother, the Queen of Peace, wrap them in her comforting mantle.”

Meet Miss Jami

Miss Jami is our Youth Minister. Though she is only 25 years old, Miss Jami has been with us for almost 21 years ! She began her journey at St. Ambrose Parish on September of 2000 as a kindergartener. She attended St. Ambrose School from kindergarten to fifth grade, which is when the school was unfortunately shut down. She then attended St. Martin of Tours School where she graduated and continued her education at Cardinal Dougherty High School. Unfortunately, Cardinal Dougherty High was also shut down after her freshmen year and she had to attend the local neighborhood high school where she graduated in 2013. During these years Miss Jami was able to become an altar server and served along Father Harkins and Father Catagnus for almost 12 years! After completing her time as an altar server she stayed on board but this time as a lector at our spanish Mass. After graduating high school, she attended Medical school and became a Medical Assistant and worked for almost three years at Temple University Hospital-Episcopal and another 2 years at University of Penn in Radnor. In 2015 she decided to switch her career and began her studies at Holy Family University, where she graduated with her Bachelors in Criminal Justice on December of 2019. Miss Jami has always said that no matter where life has taken her no other church has felt like home the way that St. Ambrose Parish has. As a youth minister she wants us to work together as a church community to create a safe and welcoming place so that our youth can develop a lifelong relationship with God.

La señorita Jami es nuestra ministra de jovenes. Aunque solo tiene 25 años, ¡la señorita Jami ha estado con nosotros durante casi 21 años! Comenzó su viaje en la parroquia de St. Ambrose en septiembre de 2000 como estudiante de kindergarten. Asistió a la escuela St. Ambrose desde el jardín de infantes hasta el quinto grado, que es cuando, lamentablemente, la escuela fue cerrada. Luego asistió a la escuela St. Martin of Tours, donde se graduó y continuó su educación en la escuela secundaria Cardinal Dougherty High School. En 2015 decidió cambiar su carrera y comenzó sus estudios en la Universidad de la Sagrada Familia, donde se graduó con su Licenciatura en Justicia Criminal en Diciembre de 2019. La señorita Jami siempre ha dicho que no importa a dónde la haya llevado la vida, ninguna otra iglesia se ha sentido como casa de la manera que se a sentido la parroquia de St. Ambrose. Como ministra de jóvenes, ella quiere que trabajemos juntos como comunidad de la iglesia para crear un lugar seguro y acogedor para que nuestros jóvenes puedan desarrollar una relación de por vida con Dios.

Meet Elsie

Elsie is the voice on the other end of the phone when you call St. Ambrose! She has worked at here for the last five years and she is a very important part of the team. Elsie is generally the first voice you hear when you call and the first face you see when you come to the Rectory Office. Originally from New York, Elsie eventually moved to Philadelphia where she raised her three daughters. She is also a very proud grandmom and great-grandmom. Elsie is truly devoted to the Lord and loves to attend daily Mass and our various seasonal devotions and Circulo de Oracion. If you need a godparent eligibility letter, a baptismal certificate or just have a question, give Elsie a call at the Rectory Office and she’ll be more than happy to help you!

¡Elsie es la voz al otro lado del teléfono cuando llamas a San Ambrosio! Ha trabajado aquí durante los últimos cinco años y es una parte muy importante del equipo. Elsie es generalmente la primera voz que escucha cuando llama y la primera cara que ve cuando llega a la oficina de la rectoría. Nacida y criada en Nueva York, Elsie finalmente se mudó a Filadelfia, donde crió a sus tres hijas. También es una abuela y bisabuela muy orgullosa. Meet Our Deacon

Deacon Jose Mendez, although officially retired, is still an active and joyful presence in our community. He was ordained in 1989 and has faithfully served our community ever since. Originally from Puerto Rico as a young man Deacon Jose came to Philadelphia where he started a family with his lovely wife Linda. Deacon Jose has said his greatest joy in his life has been as a father to his three daughters. During his 32 years as a Deacon at St. Ambrose Parish Deacon Jose has earned the friendship and respect of the priests who have worked with him, including Archbishop Nelson Perez, when he was a newly ordained priest. Parishioners know Deacon Jose for his charm, his smile and the happiness he brings to others. Along with Linda, his wife, Deacon Jose has been and continues to be a joyful servant to the people of St. Ambrose for over 30 years. He has earned the respect of his fellow clergy and the love of our community.

Diácono José Méndez, aunque oficialmente retirado, sigue siendo una presencia activa y alegre en nuestra comunidad. Fue ordenado en 1989 y desde entonces ha servido fielmente a nuestra comunidad. Originario de Puerto Rico, cuando era joven, Diácono José llegó a Filadelfia, donde comenzó una familia con su encantadora esposa Linda. Diácono José ha dicho que su mayor alegría en su vida ha sido como padre de sus tres hijas. Durante sus 32 años como diácono en la parroquia de San Ambrosio, Diácono José se ha ganado la amistad y el respeto de los sacerdotes que han trabajado con él, incluido el Arzobispo Nelson Pérez, cuando era un sacerdote recién ordenado. Los feligreses conocen al Diácono José por su encanto, su sonrisa y la felicidad que brinda a los demás. Junto con Linda, su esposa, el Diácono José ha sido y sigue siendo un sirviente alegre del pueblo de San Ambrosio durante más de 30 años. Meet Our Priest

Father Charles Ravert is our Parochial Administrator. Father Charles came to St. Ambrose on July 8, 2020. He was ordained a priest in 2014 and since then has served four years as Parochial Vicar of St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Bensalem and then for two years at St. Stanislaus Parish in Lansdale. Father Charles grew up in the Manayunk section of Philadelphia, not too far from St. Ambrose. His home parish is St. John the Baptist where he also attended grammar school. For high school he attended Mercy Career and Technical School where he was trained as a Certified Nursing Assistant. After graduating high school in 2006 and working as a nurse at St. Joseph Villa in Flourtown, he was accepted at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary. In 2013 he was ordained a Deacon and assigned to St. John the Evangelist Parish in Lower Makefield. Finally on May 17, 2014 Father Charles was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood along with his classmates by Archbishop Charles Chaput. Father Charles as often remarked that since most of his parish assignments as a seminarian, Deacon and Priest found him in the Northeast Suburbs he needed travel on the Roosevelt Boulevard frequently to return to the seminary or his mother’s house, so when he would pass St. Ambrose Church he knew he was almost home. Now, happily, St. Ambrose is Father Charles’ home. God-willing Father Charles will be officially named Pastor of St. Ambrose in Spring of 2021.

Padre Carlos Ravert es nuestro administrador parroquial. Padre Carlos llegó a San Ambrosio el 8 de julio de 2020. Fue ordenado sacerdote en 2014 y desde entonces ha servido durante cuatro años como Vicario Parroquial de la Parroquia San Carlos Borromeo en Bensalem y luego durante dos años en la Parroquia St. Stanislaus en Lansdale. Padre Carlos creció en la sección Manayunk de Filadelfia, no muy lejos de San Ambrosio. Su parroquia natal es San Juan Bautista, donde también asistió a la escuela primaria. Para la escuela secundaria asistió a la Escuela Técnica y Profesional de Mercy, donde se formó como asistente de enfermería certificado.
